Hal Hefner (Reece Thompson) has a rough time in high school, more so than most other students since his uncontrollable stuttering prevents him from fighting back. But Hal finds a golden beacon to lead him out of his misery: Ginny Ryerson (Anna Kendrick), captain of the debate team. Despite his speech impediment, Hal also joins the team in a deranged effort to win Ginny's heart.
