Erik Kernan (Josh Hartnett) is a sports writer and a good samaritan when he saves a homeless guy from getting pummeled by out-of-control college kids. However, the old, destitute dude maybe could have handled himself — but only in his early days, when he was known as Champ, the nickname of boxing legend Bob Satterfield (Samuel L. Jackson). Although the Champ's story has largely been forgotten, Erik hopes to restore the old man's reputation as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
