In the 1940s, after several years of marriage, Harry Allen (Chris Cooper) has begun cheating on his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson) with the vivacious, young Kay (Rachel McAdams). Rather than see Pat go through the humiliation of a divorce, Harry plots to kill her instead. Meanwhile, Harry's best friend Richard (Pierce Brosnan) tries to steal Kay all for himself.
