In 1978, 15-year-old Gracie Bowen (Carly Schroeder) struggles to stay competitive with her three brothers whose entire lives revolve around soccer thanks to their sport-obsessed father (Dermot Mulroney). But then tragedy strikes when one of her older siblings, Johnny (Jesse Lee Soffer), is killed in a car accident. To honor Johnny's memory, Gracie petitions for a spot on the high school varsity soccer team, which is made up of all boys. Despite resistance on all fronts, including from her unsupportive dad, Gracie fights for the right of all women to play competitive team soccer.
